Dr James Lawrence

Dr James Lawrence is a specialist Sport and Exercise Medicine Physician based in Sydney. A Fellow of the Australasian College of Sport and Exercise Physicians (ACSEP), he was awarded the College Medal in 2014 for outstanding performance in the Fellowship examinations.
As a Director at North Sydney Sports Medicine Centre, James provides expert diagnostic assessment and non-surgical management for patients of all ages and activity levels. His practice is built on the integration of clinical experience, advanced diagnostic imaging, and a commitment to shared decision-making.
Clinical Experience & Team Appointments
Dr Lawrence’s clinical approach is informed by experience providing medical oversight across a diverse range of professional sporting and performing arts organisations. This background provides a broad perspective on injury patterns, biomechanics, and rehabilitation pathways.
Football: Chief Medical Officer for Sydney FC (2015–2020).
Performing Arts: Consultant Sports Physician to Sydney Dance Company and Bangarra Dance Theatre.
High Performance: Medical provider to the Australian Rowing Team and NSWIS athletes.
Youth Sport: Significant involvement in youth development squads and provision of sports medicine coverage for Shore School, leading to a specialised interest in child and adolescent injuries.
Winter Sport: Involvement with Paralympic Winter Sport programs.
Altitude & Expedition Medicine
Beyond musculoskeletal medicine, Dr Lawrence has a longstanding interest in Expedition and Wilderness Medicine. He has published research in the field of altitude medicine and currently consults for an adventure travel company.
Having served as an Expedition Doctor on treks to Mt Kilimanjaro and Peru, he provides telehealth consultations for individuals preparing for high-altitude environments, focusing on risk assessment and altitude illness prophylaxis.
